After returning from the Cinque Terre and having a day to relax in Florence, we decided that we wanted to head back to the beach. The last time I was in Italy I had the opportunity to visit a beautiful beach town called Sperlonga. We weren't able to find a place to stay there so we decided to check out the beach town just north of it called Terracina.
So first thing in the morning we hopped on a train to Rome and then transferred to another train to get us near Terracina. We rode to a small town called Monte S. Biagio where we needed to catch a bus for a 15 minute ride to Terracina. Our luck being what it is, we ended up in Monte S. Biagio during siesta and there was no one to buy a bus ticket from! We tried to ask the bus driver, but he didn't have any patience for our broken Italian questions. How were we going to get to Terracina??
We finally just walked on the bus where the driver sold us tickets for the cost of the entire route he drives- a lot more than what we should have paid, but at least it as going to get us to our hotel.
We got to the town, which was a lot bigger than either of us expected and began our search for the hotel. It ended up being at least 3 kilometers away. We were under the beating hot sun and I was in dire need of a toilet! Not the funnest commute. But at least we got to walk along the town's boardwalk and check out our new beach.
Terracina is a cute more modern town. It's not something that I would suggest to anyone wanting an Italian experience, but it is a beautiful beach on the Meditteranean. I guess I could describe it as a large capitola/ Santa cruz of Italy? The personality of the city was nothing like Sperlonga, so in that aspect it was disappointing. But being together in a wonderful beach town along a beautiful body of water was still magical. We had a great time enjoying the beach and a lovely dinner on the boardwalk.
